USS SPIEGEL GROVE
The USS Spiegel Grove arrived on site Tuesday, 14 May 2002. Work began immediately and she was scheduled to be sunk Friday, 17 May 2002 at approximately 2:00pm. Unfortunately she had a mind of her own and prematurely sank at about 10am. The Spiegel Grove landed in a very undignified position resting upside down. Resolve Marine Group, a salvage contractor from Ft. Lauderdale was selected to put her on her side and maybe upright. Resolve and many volunteers from the Key Largo dive community, as well as others from around the country, worked long hours for many days preparing to attempt the roll. Divers from It's A Dive completed over 30 dives contributing to the effort. On Monday, 10 June 2002, the Spiegel Grove was successfully rolled onto her side but efforts to put her right side up failed. She was a world class dive site laying on here starboard side none the less for the next three years. In early July of 2005 Hurricane Dennis visited Florida. The Florida Keys were spared the brunt of the storm but our reef line experienced 20+ ft waves. Sometime on July 9, 2005 Hurricane Dennis completed what man and machine could not and rolled the Spiegel Grove upright! Our world class wreck dive just got better and is waiting for you to visit! The USS Spiegel Grove was a Landing Ship Dock (LSD 32) and now she is an artificial reef. The Spiegel Grove is 510 feet in length, and resides upright in the sand at a depth of about 140 ft. Her location is near Dixie Shoals which is between the wreck of the Benwood and the Elbow. Because of the Spiegel Grove's massive size, a large portion of the wreck is between 60 and 100ft. If you have not already done so, begin planning your trip to dive the Spiegel Grove. It's A Dive runs 6-pack trips out to the Spiegel Grove weekly.
